Area activities

The Catalan city of Perpignan is home to 120,000 inhabitants and is the Southern most city in France. Perpignan is the capital of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, formerly part of Languedoc-Roussillon region and now part of the enlarged Occitanie region. Perpignan lies just 30 kms from the Spanish border and the sun drenched beaches of the Mediterranean are just 10 kms away. Every where you walk in Perpignan you are blessed with a view of the Pyrenees mountains.

Although Perpignan has a disctinctly Catalan culture, it has never formally been linked to the province of Catalonia in Northern Spain. For a long time, Perpignan was under the governship of the King of Majorca (and the original 13th century Palace of the Kings of Majorca still stands in the city), but it has officially been part of France since 1642.

Perpignan is a popular University city and it has an impressive modern art museum (Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum) featuring works by Picasso and Dali. In fact, Dali spent some time in the city and his painting La Gare de Perpignan depicts the city´s train station as the centre of the world.

Perpignan is a passionate rugby city, with two well-supported teams: USAP Perpignan (a Rugby Union side) and Catalans Dragons (a Rugby League side).

There are many excellent beaches near Perpignan (Argeles sur Mer, St Cyprien and Canet Plage) and in the winter the ski slopes are just 45 mins drive.
