Holiday cottage France is in Castelnau de guers which is a charming 11th century fortified village. The local bar and shops are very friendly and helpful. To buy your morning baguettes follow the wonderful aroma of fresh baking at the boulangerie. The local wine is very good and at a reasonable price. A shared "village secret" is to swim and fish in the nearby Herault river, a beautiful shady place on a hot day.
The village of Castelnau-de-Guers is charming and historic, and you can walk out each morning to its boulangerie, which boasts the best baguette in France, and warm buttery croissants. The village is near everything you want to see as a tourist, without being overrun by tourists itself. The mountains of the Haut Languedoc, the Canal du Midi, the Mediterranean, the awe-inspiring Cirque des Navacelles, mountain biking and hiking trails, abbeys and cathedrals, the river Herault with its stunning gorge, the ancient village of St. Guilhelm le Deserts, the oyster port of Meze, the artsy medieval city of Pezenas, the home of Moliere, the canal town of Sete, and vineyards! We are in the largest wine-growing region in the world. The Languedoc is the sunniest part of France, with more than 300 days of sunshine a year. That means fresh market produce and amazing wines year-round, and Maison Rose-Clair can be your own private food and wine paradise.
Pezenas (a five minute car ride ), once the capital of Languedoc, is well preserved and graced by grand renaissance architecture. Walk through the maze of narrow cobbled lanes and absorb the history spanning thousands of years. A lively wide square is the location of the very popular Saturday market, where one can sample some of the delicious local produce. During the summer months there are a variety of fetes and festivals to be enjoyed including theatre productions celebrating Moliere who produced plays here in the mid-seventeenth century.
