The local village of Verzeilles contains around 300 inhabitants. You can purchase fresh bread daily, milk, fruit, veg and a variety of things in the local shop which is a five minute away from the house right beside the post office. There are tennis courts and public swimming pool in the village. Just across the road you will also find an Equestrian School with really nice owners. You will also find a number of supermarkets just 15 minutes away (either in the direction of Carcassonne or Limoux). Limoux is a bustling market town and well worth a visit on market days. The town hosts many good restaurants. Limoux has plenty of shops and restaurants, as well as a Doctor, Dentist and Pharmacy. On Saturday night you will even have dancing in the village square and entertainment in the village.
The most obvious local site to visit is the fabulous medieval castle at Carcassonne. You can easily spend a full day wandering the ramparts and the narrow streets of the village inside the walls. Carcassonne is visited by more than 3 million visitors each year and is a designated Unesco world heritage site. Apparently, Carcassonne´s castle provided Walt Disney with the inspiration for the castle in “Sleeping Beauty”. If you happen to be in Carcassonne on the 14th July, then the firework display over the castle is spectacular. It would be a real shame to miss them but be prepared for crowds. You would be advised to take the train into Carcassonne from down the road, as the parking in Carcassonne can be very difficult.
Mirepoix is a small town situated between Carcasonne and Foix. On the large market square you can still admire the half-timbered houses supported on wooden pillars, creating a magnificent covered arcade. The weekly market is held in Mirepoix on a Monday and this is really the best time to visit the town.
There is a great boulangerie in the nearby village of Leuc, with the best bread in the area. There are many local markets featuring delicious local produce as well as pottery and crafts. During the summer all the local villages host a local festival (the one in Verzeilles is in July). The festivals are complete with live music, dancing, food & drink, stalls and entertainment lasting into the small hours. The locals are very welcoming and very pleased if you come along and join in.
