The Aude department boasts two UNESCO World heritage sites, the fortified city of Carcassonne and the 235km long Canal du Midi. You can enjoy a relaxing day hiring a canal barge and floating down the canal. The Aude was also an important historical location for Catharism, a dissident religion that spread rapidly in the region in the 13th century. The Cathars fought against in the Albigensian Crusade in 1209 and its followers were all but eradicated in the 14th century. But the ruins of many Cathar castles still remain to day, in what is dubbed "Cathar Country". The medieval castles at Peyrepertuse, Quéribus and Villerouge can still be visited today. For the lore adventurous, the 200km Cathar Trail is highly recommended. It runs from the Mediterranean all the way to the Pyrénées and you can discover a number of medieval castles dotted along the way.
The Aude department also has some fine sandy beaches at Narbonne-Plage, La Palme and Port La Nouvelle, where people of all ages gather to top up their tans. The Languedoc is one of the sunniest areas in France. The coastline around Narbonne is one of the best windsurfing spots in the world and more recently, has also developed a number of kite surfing centres.
Carcassonne is a wonderful town to visit throughout the year. During the summer, the fireworks over the castle on Bastille day are not to be missed. Also, Carcassonne Festival during July, brings together over 100 performances, including opera, dance, theatre and rock bands. Carcassonne also holds a large weekly market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at Place Carnot in the town centre. Castelnaudary has a food market on Monday morning and the market at Lézignan-Corbières takes place in the centre of the commune on Wednesday mornings. One of the best local markets however, is held on Mondays in the nearby medieval town of Mirepoix. The ornate market square is a bustling site and the market takes in much of the town.

Beautiful big house, in incredibly peaceful vineyard countryside, with stunning views of the Pyrenees mountains! As soon as we opened the front door, we instantly felt at home. We were here just our immediate small family with a young toddler, and the owners were able to provide us with cot, highchair, safety gates and plugs, which all was very handy. The location is fantastic. Surrounded by hills and vineyards, no roads or traffic noise, only the sound of birds. Yet only 5min drive from a lovely little village that has everything that you need - great boulangerie & butcher, and very useful little shop. And only 30min drive from Carcassonne airport, which was so convenient! Loads of really nice towns and villages for visits (including the stunning medieval town of Mirepoix, Limoux, Bram to name a few close by), some great wineries and chateaux, and obviously Carcassonne. In summary, a perfect relaxed French countryside getaway. We will definitely come again! And probably next time with friends and family!
Reviewer: The beautiful views, the stunningly decorated interiors, the quietness & privacy all combine to give this amazing place an instantly relaxing and homely feel. The house had pretty much everything that we needed - comfortable beds, lovely linen & towels, pristine bathrooms, all the kitchen equipment and supplies to cook up a storm, as well as games and toys, wifi, TV, ipod dock/ hifi. It is massive too - with 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, it would be the perfect place for a gathering of friends or family.
Date: As it was late winter, so unfortunately for us we weren't able to benefit from the amazing-looking outdoor pool, which would no doubt be incredible in summer. We'll just have to come again then!
This picturesque house is set in lovely, tranquil French countryside, surrounded by vineyards. We visited the surrounding towns less than expected, as it was so nice staying around the house and enjoying the property and the views. Within minutes of leaving the house we were cycling through vineyards or through the nearby forest. The spacious living/dining/kitchen area (which opens directly onto the terrace) was great for our group of friends. The house was as described, clean and had every convenience we needed.
Just returned from a week at this fabulous villa in the south of France. The setting is rural and quiet which we like. The nearby village (5 minutes away) had a fresh bakery, convenience store, post office, pharmacy and restaurant. We could get everything we needed. A larger supermarket is about 15 minutes away, but we took advantage of the local fresh food markets. We especially enjoyed the one at Mirepoix. The house was comfortable and well laid out and well appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed. Large fridge/freezer and cupboard space. Everything is maintained to a high standard with clean bathrooms. The open showers were a bit of a challenge, but worked well with good water pressure and plenty of hot water for our group of 8. We took day trips to Carcassonne (of course) and even to Andorra. The countryside is beautiful. Loads of historic sites and vineyards to feast your eyes on. Enough to do and the opportunity to sit out and relax as well. Too cold for the pool but it looked like it would be tons of fun n warmer weather...we'll have to come back in the summer months.
