The Cevennes has some of the best cycling routes and walking trails in Europe and the local wildlife includes eagles, vultures, otters, deer, kites and buzzards. It is a popular foraging area for wild mushrooms and truffles and you can also find some extremely rare wild orchids.
Nearby there is an extensive tree-climbing centre which takes you through the canopy of the forest, as well as canoeing along the River Cèze. In the nearby town of Alès you will also find a professional motor racing circuit and an adjoining go-kart circuit. But most of all, you will enjoy the wonderful peace & quiet. The large town of Alès is 18 km away, the historic town of Uzès is 30 km and Nimes and Avignon are both 50 mins drive away. There is a TGV train station in both Nimes and Avignon, as well as airports with low cost flights to the UK.
The Monastery was active up until the French Revolution in 1789. Originally the Monastery contained a bakery, brewery, auditorium, chapel and reading room. Up to 50 monks may have lived at the Monastery at any one time. This apartment rental is located on the ground floor of the Monastery in the former sleeping quarters the Abbot. The apartment can sleep up to 2 people.
You reach the Abbots house through the courtyard of the Monastery and entering a cloistered hallway. In the apartment you will find the bathroom with shower and toilet on the left. The living room / kitchen is housed in office of the Abbot and still has the original arched ceiling. The stone counter top of the kitchen and the antique table with chairs gives this room a special touch. Behind two beautifully refurbished antique doors, you will find a spacious closet for storing food and wine. The kitchen is simply equipped with a fridge, sink, hotplate and storage for the cooking utensils, pots and pans.
Next to the living room there is the original Abbot´s bedroom. The bedroom contains a King size double bed (which can be separated into 2 single beds).
Outside: Surrounding the Monastery there is over 60 hectares of land, which contains an art trail, old stone walls, walking trails and a pond. There are plenty of shaded spots under mature trees to sit and have a picnic. There is also a large heated swimming pool which comes with the most amazing views
The prices quoted include the linen, towels, end of stay cleaning and tourist tax. Prices do not include the half-board supplement of 5 evening meals and 7 breakfasts (€169 per person / €113 per children). The restaurant is closed on Tuesday and Friday evenings. The restaurant has one of the finest reputations in the area and the food is excellent. The half-board supplement enables the Owner to employ a full time chef and to keep the meal costs to a very reasonable level.
Last visited: Jan 2019. It is not often that you can say that you spent your summer holidays at a former Monastery. The apartments have plenty of character and the swimming pool and local activities will ensure that you have an unforgettable holiday experience. Nearby you have some stunning villages and towns to visit (Uzès, Anduze, Barjac and Lussan to name but a few). These holiday apartments are located 50 mins drive from Nimes or Avignon airport. The old Monastery is not easy to find, but as the Owner says "we are hard to find but even harder to leave!!". Highly recommended for a relaxing holiday.

The region first came to international prominence through the work of the Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stephenson. In 1879 he published his book "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes", in which he describes his journey through the region and his many stays at the local monasteries.
The Monastery dates back over 900 years and the last monks left in 1787 when the Monastery was dissolved during the French Revolution. The Monastery contained a bakery, brewery, library, auditorium and chapel. Today it has been renovated and turned into a holiday centre, featuring painting holidays, cookery classes and singing courses. It has also been used as a location for weddings.
The local villages of Molieres-sur-Ceze has a population of around 1,500 people and is surrounded by dense forest and was a former mining village. Today the village is a popular place for holidaymakers looking to explore the local countryside on bike or on foot. The local area has some of the best cycling routes and hiling trails in France.
Popular local activities include canoeing in the local river (River Cèze) and an extensive tree-climbing centre which takes you through the canopy of the local forest. This is located just 500m from the house.
The nearest large town is Alès which is just a short drive away. Alès was historically a mining town, as well as an important centre for silk weaving. The town became an important refuge for French Protestants (Huguenots) during the 16th Century. The town contains a lot of shops, larger supermarkets, restaurants, banks, DIY stores and services for the region.
Nearby, you have some of the prettiest towns and villages in France. Uzès and Anduze are both 25 minutes away and nearby you will find the beautiful villages of Barjac, Lussan and La Rouque-sur-Cèze.
