Area activities

In the early 20th century, Ceret served as an Artists´ mecca for the likes of Picasso, Matisse, Marc Chagall, Braque, and others. In the centre of Ceret, there is an internationally recognised Modern Art Museum, which displays many of the paintings, sculptures and ceramics produced by famous artists who have made Ceret their home.

Ceret is also famous for its production of cherries. The town produces the first harvest of cherries in France and a ceremonial basket of cherries is still sent to the President of France in late March/early April.

Ceret has a distinctly Catalan culture, with many festivals taking place during the year celebrating the traditional heritage of the area. The pace of life in the town is distinctly relaxed, with locals gathering on park benches to chat or watch other townsfolk playing boules. At the same time, the town squares are surrounded by restaurants offering fine French cuisine and good local wine. Cafes and gift shops are tucked into the narrow lanes leading off the squares. On Saturdays, there is a colourful weekly farmers´ and artisans´ market.

The Mediterranean beaches are 30 minutes away and in the winter, the ski slopes in the Pyrenees and Andorra can be accessed in 45 mins.

Ceret has a wonderful mild Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and mild winters. There is a public swimming pool in the town and other swimming options include the local river and a lovely lake with beach and snack stand about 10 minutes away.
