If you're planning a walking holiday in France, then the South of France has to be the place to come. The Pyrenees offer all that's best in walking holidays in France: fantastic scenery, glorious weather and variety. Serious trekkers will relish the chance to seek out the unexplored high Pyrenees mountains. Those who walk at an easier pace can stay closer to civilization and enjoy the varied culture and history of the Pyrenees area. The recently developed coast to coast (Atlantic to Mediterranean) long distance Pyrenees footpath - the GR10 -  offers a superb opportunity to walk through green countryside, climb snowy peaks and explore the natural beauty of the Pyrenees. The Corbieres hills are a great destination for a walking holiday in France. This relatively undiscovered and sparsely populated regions of Southern France has a rugged beauty to it. What makes the Corbieres hills so dramatic to walk through are the amazing remnants of Cathar castles built in the most inaccessible locations to protect the inhabitants from religous persecution. The Corbieres hills are situated between the plain of Carcassonne and the Pyrenees. The Corbieres hills is superb walking country, offering many varied and very rewarding routes. You will also be able unwind at the end of the day with a glass or two of good Corbieres wine.


Haut Languedoc Regional Park is well set up for walking holidays. Since France declared this beautiful area a regional Park in 1973 it has become very popular with hikers. Haut Languedoc Regional Park is situated south of the Massif Central within the Aveyron, Hérault and Tarn departments of France. Haut Languedoc Regional Park covers an an area of 2,605 km² very diverse countryside. As well as habiting 85,000 people, Haut languedoc Regional Park is also home to more than 240 species of birds (see http://www.parc-haut-languedoc.fr/ for more information about Haut Languedoc Regional Park).

 

Walking in the CevennesCevennes If you would like to plan your walking holiday in France around a theme, then Robert Stevensons book "Travels with a Donkey" would be as good as any. Following Stevenson's trail around the Cevennes hills at the turn of the 19th century France ensures that you will have a walking holiday to remember. The Cevennes became a National Park in 1970. Since then they have become a popular destination for hikers of all abilities. Rising above the plains of the Languedoc the Cevennes is a region of deep river valleys and hill slopes covered in forests. The summits of the Cevennes are made up of limestone plateaux called the Causses (“Cans”). The Cevennes today is an ideal region for nature lovers and hikers.

The Languedoc is one of the most fascinating areas of Europe, It has a wonderful climate, rich wildlife, a spectacular coast, chic resorts, beautiful scenery and astonishing history.
